Siop Gymunedol / HAVARDS / Community Shop

Completion took place on 25th November. First trading day was Saturday, 26th November

Havards is now the first Community Owned Hardware Shop in Britain. Please call in and buy something!

29th November: Hooray - We're OPEN! We are delighted with the reception from the customers who have been into the shop. You will often meet one of the Committee if you go into the shop. A manager has been appointed and starts on 1st December, Betty Fells. Full details can be found in the latest Newsletter Also, please see some photos below, and many more (soon) on the Facebook page..

25th November: It has been a frenetic week with sale contracts, employment contracts and insurance to sort out. A stock take is underway as this is being written. We are making the assumption that we can raise suffient funds to cover a shortfall between the £443,000 now raised and the required amount.

The Share Offer is still open. We still need more funds to complete the renovations needed and other items as defined in the business plan. You can still help us by investing here.

22nd November: We are delighted to have received a grant from Pembrokeshire County Council, via the "Enhancing Pembrokeshire" scheme to fund a Volunteer Co-ordinator and associated costs. This is great news! So we are now recruiting a volunteer co-ordinator, approx. 1 day per week. See our JOBS page for more details.

20th October: SHARE OFFER REOPENED. Despite our reaching more than our initial target the Community Ownership Fund Grant decision is delayed by at least two months, it seems by the chaos in Westminster. More details are in our News Archive.

Late payments/investments: If you still want to invest or are late paying, don't worry, we are still accepting investments and payments.

First Community Owned Hardware Shop in Britain!

Finally we have started trading - on 26th November. We are advised that this is the first ever Community Owned Hardware Shop in Britain. However, we still have not heard about the COF grant, and almost certainly need more funds. Please help us by investing!

About Havards

Havards store is a traditional Ironmongers shop dating back to 1840. It is a vital asset for the Community of Trefdraeth, and the many visitors. But the owner was unable to find someone to take the shop over and it was likely that it would be shut it down if a way was not found to keep it open.

We have set up a Community Benefit Society to purchase and to run Havards as a Community Shop. The name of this society is Siop Havards Gymunedol Tydrath (SHGT). There is more information on the ABOUT US page.

We still need to raise approximately £475,000. This will come from share sales, grants and loans. We are applying for a grant from the UK Community Ownership Fund and have successfully passed the first stage ("Expression of Interest") and been invited to submit a full application. We also plan to apply, as necessary, for other loans from the many places that support community projects.

We need your help! We need supporters to offer to purchase shares (interest paid and vote!). You can purchase shares online or by post - for full details see our investment page, or click INVEST in the menu.

This initiative launched in June 2021 with some excellent support from Planed with local and national press releases. It was featured on National S4C programme ”HENO”.

The funds raised will allow the scheme to purchase the Havards Shop for the community and have sufficient funding for renovations and improvements.

Why support us?

It's a good investment! Community Shares are an excellent way to support this community venture, you will have a voting voice and help to keep a vital part of the history of the town and an essential community facility open.

Help the Community

Play your part in our community - the shop will save trips further afield, at a time when we need to reduce unnecessary travel. Shops are at the heart of any small town, servicing needs and helping bring people together.

Why else should I invest in Havards?

Here's where you can not only get a good return, but play your part in sustaining a vital facility. We hope the many visitors to Newport, who return time and again, will also consider investing.
